Profile Far North Wild Rice is a small wild rice growing operation, owned and operated by Richard Russell out of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Richard has been growing wild rice in the north for 25 years. Far North’s Wild Rice is grown in remote lakes and streams north of the 55th parallel in Manitoba. The north’s long, warm summer days, and clean pure waters produce a long grain, flavorful rice known to be of the finest in the world. Our rice is Certified Organic by OPAM. If you go ‘up north’ in the late fall, amid the falling leaves and crisp air you can see Richard and his crew harvesting the rice in his airboat (pictured below). This light, flat bottomed boat (one of the few concessions to technology) skims the surface of the shallow waters of the lake shore allowing the harvesters to gather the crop quickly and at peak quality. Development of a good crop depends entirely upon the weather: Very high or low water levels, heavy winds and hail, or an early frost can destroy the crop or prevent it from ripening into its beautiful deep brown color and tasty kernels. Thus, good wild rice is a precious delicacy!
Far North’s wild rice, growing in natural, wild environment of a northern lake rates superior quality – having a very rich dark brown color, deep nutty flavor and crisp aroma! Wild rice is not like the common patty-grown rice which is farmed using chemicals and automation, creating a product inferior in size, color and flavor. Far North’s wild rice is an organic product. When purchasing your wild rice, look for a dark color and give it a sniff! If there’s a swampy smell, this scent will come through as a musty flavor in your cooking. Far North Wild Rice uses pure uncontaminated water during the cleaning process to help our rice keep its rich, nutty aroma. Wild rice can be used in a multitude of dishes - from every day cooking to gourmet creations – and triples or more in size, so a little goes a long way! A healthy food with only one-half a gram of fat in three-quarters of a cup, rice is also high in fiber and has great nutritional value. Email at: rrussell@mts.net
